The Australian Magpie Family at Christmas 2015

Magpie mums and dads are busy birds at Christmas time. They are omnivorous birds, so we give them minced meat and sunflower seeds when they visit. And they visit every day, as you might have guessed. Even on rainy days. They just love our hospitality. This pair have been regular visitors for the last three years and every year they bring along their babies. Young  magpies are able to forage  on their own three weeks after leaving the nest, and by six months old can feed themselves, but some birds continue begging for food until eight or nine months of age, according to Google. The fledglings in my videos are about two months old and one of them seems to be famished.

Mother Magpie is a busy mum, while Father Magpie just looks on, not a hands-on dad, just a sort of old-fashioned male chauvinist … ! But do not jump to hasty conclusions! You might also say he’s a true gentleman letting his wife enjoy her meal in peace. As a matter of fact, both parents feed their babies, but always feed themselves first, as I’ve observed. Fair enough, I’d say. Rearing a young family is a demanding job.

A bit of drama… just some sibling rivalry as in any family!

Yummy, yummy, yummy!   Thank, you Mummy!

Let us be as happy as the Magpie Family! 🙂

Peace and joy to you at this blessed Christmas season and have a wonderful New Year!

Super videos, Irina. They really help to get your point across about happy families, especially at Christmas. I love the way you compare the magpies’ behaviour to that of any family – human or otherwise! We have the odd magpie or two in our garden, but not on a regular basis. We get lots of jackdaws and odd crows, too, but we have dozens of the smaller bird species. I agree, it’s lovely to see birds in the garden, and fascinating to watch the young being fed, like your magpies! Like you, we feed them all.
I hope you had a wonderful Chrismas and are looking forward to 2016. I knew you hadn’t posted for a while, but sometimes, blogging has to take second place behing more important things. ❤

Oh, I’m so glad you enjoyed the videos, Millie. These are the very first videos I managed to upload on YouTube and I feel on top of the world at the moment! I just hope I remember the procedure for my next upload! 🙂 I’ll have to look up ‘jackdaws’. Yes, birds do cheer us up.

I was actually busy on Facebook!!! My New Year’s resolution should be less online time altogether. Very best wishes to you in the New Year. Cheers ❤

I’ve never got my Facebook page going, so I’m duly impressed by the fact that you are doing so well on it! I sort of opened a FB page but left it at that. Anyway, I haven’t any other resolutions this year, other that to finish my book – so I won’t be on WP a great deal either. Have a great 2016, Irina. 🙂
