SunWinks! September 21, 2014: Playing the Field

Calling poets to read this interesting post and to submit your work!

steelheaddoug's avatarSunWinks!

Dear SunWinkers!SunWinksLogo

“The time has come,” the Walrus said,
“To talk of many things:
Of shoes–and ships–and sealing-wax–
Of cabbages–and kings–
And why the sea is boiling hot–
And whether pigs have wings.”
Lewis Carroll

Well, I got Len to write a poem, so pigs must have wings…..

Anyway, poetry is many things, and consists of many things, and we are going to talk about one of them. Today I want you to think about the placement of the words on the page.

Now, poetry is an oral medium. A good poem must be read out loud, both by the poet in the process of composition, and by the discerning reader.

It follows that the organization of a poem affects how it sounds when read out loud. When it is written in a fixed form, such as a ballad, the form is imposed on the content, and the content…

On the Terrace (SunWinks! 14 September 2014: Gently Down the Stream)

P1100679 mod sharp 25 signed

Late afternoon
On the terrace

The sun is warming my back
He’s facing me, eyes shut
A jackhammer in the distance
Drrrr drrrr drrrr drrrr drrrr
A drill in the neighbour’s house
Then a hammer
Bang bang bang
Rainbow lorikeets are holding a meeting
Noisy buggers
Our canary is tweeting inside
Sweet bird
Still with us
Although very old
I look up
A jet plane in the blue sky
High above
A white speck
Gliding by quietly

Oh!

A siren’s blaring in the distance
Coming closer
Then it stops
Someone’s hurt
No doubt

Peaceful afternoon
On the terrace

PART 1 of ANMEF campaign to seize German New Guinea in 1914

Excellent post, well researched!

Blooded in German New Guinea

Note that in writing this post, as primary sources are hard to obtain, I drew on information from internet sources that contained inconsistent data. I attempted to use the information that appeared to be consistent. (References supplied and sources cited in Part 2)

It was not during the landing at Anzac Cove in 1914 that Australian soldiers were blooded in WW1.  It was on 11th September 1914, on the road to Bita Paka in German New Guinea.

Background

This account focuses on the important events of the Australian amphibious expedition of the force called the ANMEF in 1914 that seized German New Guinea and the territories of its protectorate, amounting to 100. 000 sq miles of land, stretching from German New Guinea mainland to Admiralty Islands, New Ireland, Bougainville and Nauru.

A Poem is like an Orange (SunWinks! 7 September 2014 – Shuffle)

IMAG1063 text signed

An orange is a fruit.
Fruit it is with pips.
Pips, pips, pips and
Juicy orange flesh

It is full of vitamin C.
It is good for you.

Orange juice is an orange juiced, with no pips.
It is good for you, too.

A poem is not an orange.
No. No. We all know that.

But

A poem is the product of a juice: the creative juice.
It is an orange in reverse.

Ah.

Yes. It swirls in your heart and brain.
It swirls in juicy swirls.
It swirls in juicy rainbow colours.

It is good for you, too.

So let the colours flow.
Let them flow unhindered.
Orange, yellow, purple, blue and green.
Let them flow.

Let them flow, flow, flow and flow.
Catch them as they flow
On the go.

Catch them in a poem.

*

I was trying to shuffle, but half way through describing an orange the idea about the creative juice occurred in my mind and this poem is what I ended up with.
