The Last Bloom
Agapanthus bloom
the last this summer; petals
curl up in the heat
Pods proudly expose
pregnant green bellies in wait-
next season’s splendour
Were I a flower
death would pass me by; reborn
each year – what delight!

Sunset at Beauty Point, Sydney, Australia.
The sun will come out again tomorrow
It will shine on the world
Plants and trees will grow
Birds will chirp and sing
Children will play and giggle
While my heart will pine
For you my love
Lost to me
No, no
Not for ever
It cannot be
It mustn’t be!

I agree the truth of the past should never be ignored.
My name is Mufti.
Sniffing about is my favourite occupation.
I’m partially blind. Actually, almost totally blind in the right eye.
I nearly banged my head against the wall a moment ago.
Ouch! Now I did bang it.
Sigh.
This is Maisy. She follows me everywhere. Like a shadow. Nosey cat.
Sniff, sniff, sniff…Ahh, what enchanting scents! I just love it.
My eyesight is poor, but my sense of smell is intact.
Pottering about in the garden is sheer delight.
I’m a young, sharp-eyed cat.
He thinks I’m following him out of curiosity.
There is some truth in that, I’m naturally curious, of course.
However, my main purpose is to be near him in case he needs me.
What are you doing, Mufti?
I’m looking for the magic dandelion. I was told it would restore my eyesight.
All I have to do is stare at it for a while.
And you believe in magic? You’re a dreamer, Mufti dear.
That’s the one! I’m sure it is. It’s so beautiful.
Let me now stare at its beauty.
Let me concentrate and just stare.
I’m staring and staring.
And staring.
Nothing!
I can’t see any better.
Sigh.
Maybe it’s this one…
You don’t understand, Maisy. You’re too young.
I’ll keep looking for the magic dandelion. I’ve got to believe in something.
Life without hope would be very hard to bear.
You wouldn’t want to hang out with an old depressed dude, would you?
Remember this, Maisy. One day you’ll be old too. If you live long enough, that is.
Never give up Hope.
Oh, maybe it’s this one under my chin!

Cameron’s Look of Love – Haibun
Gazing lovingly
Longing for a warm cuddle
My heart is melting
Cameron is my neighbour Chrissi’s pet. I used to look after him and Mufti, the little Shih Tzu, who is now blind in one eye.
Cameron’s ears and eyes are peering through the fence. He’s whining and whimpering, ‘Come over here, hurry up!’ ‘I’m coming, I’m coming’, I keep repeating as I’m approaching to meet him. ‘Here I am, my little buddy! Hello, how are you?’ I put my two fingers through the chicken wire and try to pat his white, silky coat. Oh how we’d love this old fence to crumble down! We’d have fun like we used to.
Now the three of us old mates, Cameron, Mufti and I, are getting on a bit, but still kicking! Folk wisdom claims that you’re as old as you feel. It’s funny, inside I feel ageless. Except when I’m tired, then I feel as old as a hundred-year-old Moreton Bay fig tree. Another 21 years to get there, and I just might get there as both my mum and dad were centenarians when they passed on. A horrifying prospect, actually. Yet, I shouldn’t worry too much if I inherited Dad’s genes – he still practised medicine at 99!

I’m very distressed at the latest news. Cameron is in hospital with tick paralysis fighting for his life. Nasty ticks! They’re common in the Australian bush in summer, but this one attacked in Cameron’s own garden. Luckily, Mufti is okay. Please pray for sweet little Cameron. Thanks ~ Irina

My December garden loves
Your exquisite hue

                                                         shorn and manicured to clean
                                                                      green sterility
……….
My lawn is a wild
meadow where grasses of all
kinds grow and prosper
……….
(Oh no, these are not caterpillars!)
……….
In my lawn, cheerful
golden dandelions dance
in the summer breeze

The fluffy ones are
ready to fly to the end
of the horizon
………
Somewhere there in the
clover patch there’s a four-leaf
Haven’t found it yet!
But I found a bug
sitting pretty, sitting still
meditating… Wow!
So, learn a lesson
form the modest bug, sit still
and meditate now!
Smile and be grateful
for the splendour around you
Have a lovely day!
